PPOP RISING IN 2022

What a ride for the year 2022, as we witness the success of rising P-Pop from the groups that have performed well to the unprecedented increase of PPop fans, locally and globally. The widespread support of fans all around the world has never been done before, as major music festivals started to include PPop groups and artists in the lineup.

For the first time in history, more than 60 released PPop singles were made in this year, from established acts to underrated ones. Another achievement that featured more than 10 groups debuted this year, which are VXON, G22, KAIA, YGIG, and others. Reportedly almost 20 groups are about to debut – either "Online" or "Live", in 2023 or 2024.

Many PPop groups and artists enjoyed success in international level – such as appearance of SB19 and 1st.One in Billboard Hot Trending Songs Chart, featuring ALAMAT in an article in UK, BINI and BGYO enjoys charting success in international, MNL48 started to get fanbase in Indonesia, and many others.

PPOP Explosion was held in 2011, dedicated for PPop fans, in which the performers are XLR8, Pop Girls, and RPM. But in 2022, PPOP CON, Tugatog, and Popstival made it bigger. Those 3 music festivals became vital to the growing "PPop Rise '' movement, and around 20 PPop groups and artists participated.

The positive recognition of Pinoy pop in Philippine media this year became the biggest in recent years. For the first time, two talent survival shows (Dream Maker and Top Class) had been broadcasted this year. Many variety and entertainment shows started to give more space for PPop acts. Also for the first time, the latest edition of PPOP Awards are officially held in a live set-up.

The "PPop Rise" movement this year may even be bigger in the near future, as the Creative Industries Act of 2022, officially became a republic act last July, that serves as government's recognition of Original Pilipino Music (in which PPop included) and other fields of creative industry.

Truly this year, we witness the rise of Pinoy pop that can surely inspire more to be part of the industry. Either are aiming to be a performer, producer, songwriter, editor, and even media that are committed to make PPop better for the future.

PPOP is happening, PPOP is rising!

WHY PPOP RARELY GETS PLAYED ON RADIO?

Unless you are the most successful PPOP group in the Philippines, PPOP has shown little to no love from radio stations, specifically the Contemporary Hit Radio stations, all despite having tons of requests coming from fans of PPOP groups.

Why is that?

First, let’s first explain what Contemporary Hit Radio or CHR stations are. Contemporary hit radio (also known as CHR, contemporary hits, hit list, current hits, hit music, top 40, or pop radio) is a radio format that is common in many countries that focuses on playing current and recurrent popular music as determined by the Top 40 music charts.

Examples of CHR stations in the Philippines include but not limited to, Republ1ka FM1 87.5, Magic 89.9, Monster RX93.1, 99.5 Play FM, and Q Radio 105.1.

In short, these popular radio stations play popular songs that most people do not know about with some OPM added in accordance with Executive Order 255 series of 1987 which states that OPM must be played at least 4 times per hour.

But based on experience listening to the radio, you normally hear 1 or 2 OPM songs per hour, especially on CHR stations, most notably from artists that are not as well known to the masses, unless the song is SUPER popular.

That’s when Masa stations kick in. Unlike CHR stations which use English as a medium to talk to the listener, Masa stations use the Tagalog language or any local dialect if you are living from another area.

Masa stations tend to play songs that are known to many people.

There are two reasons why PPOP rarely gets played on CHR stations. First, the song does NOT fit the format of the station. And second, the station has yet to connect with the labels of the PPOP groups.

If the PPOP group’s label is from a major record label like Sony or UMG, it has the best chance to be part of the station’s playlist. However, if they are part of a label like Star Music, or any other label, the chances are impossible since the radio station has yet to connect with the label.

The key for any radio station is to have connections with the labels and it is up to the music director of the station to decide if the song fits that station.

All these reasons happen despite the efforts of the fans to request a certain song on those radio stations.

Radio stations need to embrace PPOP and give other groups a chance to shine.

PPOP is happening, PPOP is rising!

GENERATIONS OF PPOP (PART 2)

SECOND GENERATION

The second generation of PPOP started in late 2009 when Viva Records launched the two groups to brand the Viva identity – XLR8 and Pop Girls. XLR8 is a PPop boy group that debuted in 2009, but since 2011, their group activities became rare that eventually disbanded, meanwhile Pop Girls is a PPop girl that debuted in 2009, and the members were come and go, which still lasted until 2017.

Other groups were also formed, such as Down To Mars, Eurasia, 1:43, Chicser, UGG, BoybandPH, and others. This generation gave us an "out-of-the-box" approach, which novelty concept had been oftenly used in the predecessor. This generation started to experiment with concepts that are inspired from JPop, KPop, Hokkien pop, and Western pop.

Still, the perception from the listeners was not quite accepted at that time. Many people aren't comfortable with the visuals, and the music. Many people say that PPop is just "copycat" from other countries.

Even though criticisms were too harsh, the entertainment agencies, such as Viva, always tried to formulate the concepts that would match Filipino audience.

THIRD GENERATION

The rise of PPop has been started, as MNL48 and SB19, the "PPop Queens" and "PPop Kings", debuted in 2018. Although their musical approach and concepts are different, their denominator is to pursue "PPop" as an established genre in the Philippine music scene. As expected, their journey wasn't great as many people weren't recognized and even received harsh feedback.

In the following, these two groups gradually became the standard of the current generation, as they break barriers and prejudices from people. SB19 had their unexpected success on their comeback "Go Up", while MNL48 released 2 successful comebacks, which are "365 Araw ng Eroplanong Papel" and "Ikaw Ang Melody".

Since 2020, even at the surge of CoViD-19 pandemic and series of lockdowns, PPop is still rising, as more and more groups (and soloists) are debuting. Many of them are BINI, BGYO, Alamat, VXON, 4th Impact, 1stOne, and many others.

This generation approached it to the next level of concepts, music, choreography, music videos, and live performances.

Largely because of the presence of the internet, the "PPop Rise" movement became known worldwide because of that. This generation proves that Pinoy pop can belong as what Pinoy rock, Pinoy rap and ballad appreciating before.
