GENERATIONS OF PPOP (PART 2)

SECOND GENERATION

The second generation of PPOP started in late 2009 when Viva Records launched the two groups to brand the Viva identity – XLR8 and Pop Girls. XLR8 is a PPop boy group that debuted in 2009, but since 2011, their group activities became rare that eventually disbanded, meanwhile Pop Girls is a PPop girl that debuted in 2009, and the members were come and go, which still lasted until 2017.

Other groups were also formed, such as Down To Mars, Eurasia, 1:43, Chicser, UGG, BoybandPH, and others. This generation gave us an "out-of-the-box" approach, which novelty concept had been oftenly used in the predecessor. This generation started to experiment with concepts that are inspired from JPop, KPop, Hokkien pop, and Western pop.

Still, the perception from the listeners was not quite accepted at that time. Many people aren't comfortable with the visuals, and the music. Many people say that PPop is just "copycat" from other countries.

Even though criticisms were too harsh, the entertainment agencies, such as Viva, always tried to formulate the concepts that would match Filipino audience.

THIRD GENERATION

The rise of PPop has been started, as MNL48 and SB19, the "PPop Queens" and "PPop Kings", debuted in 2018. Although their musical approach and concepts are different, their denominator is to pursue "PPop" as an established genre in the Philippine music scene. As expected, their journey wasn't great as many people weren't recognized and even received harsh feedback.

In the following, these two groups gradually became the standard of the current generation, as they break barriers and prejudices from people. SB19 had their unexpected success on their comeback "Go Up", while MNL48 released 2 successful comebacks, which are "365 Araw ng Eroplanong Papel" and "Ikaw Ang Melody".

Since 2020, even at the surge of CoViD-19 pandemic and series of lockdowns, PPop is still rising, as more and more groups (and soloists) are debuting. Many of them are BINI, BGYO, Alamat, VXON, 4th Impact, 1stOne, and many others.

This generation approached it to the next level of concepts, music, choreography, music videos, and live performances.

Largely because of the presence of the internet, the "PPop Rise" movement became known worldwide because of that. This generation proves that Pinoy pop can belong as what Pinoy rock, Pinoy rap and ballad appreciating before.

PPOP is happening, PPOP is rising!
