It was very normal Monday of September 2, 2019, and another week of stress from work for the professionals. But for SB19, that Monday was a special day.
A Twitter account named "lyra" (also named as "@BAE_sodu"), which a solid fan of K-Pop, shared a 2-minute clip of the dance practice version of "Go Up", where it said that the song didn't cringe at all, and their dance are also great. And since then, the momentum of SB19, and PPOP was skyrocketing. The SB19 members were in shock and awe to the moment, that until now, they felt surreal that their dance practice got viral. But how that day the PPop "go up"? Let's go as early as 2014, when a Korean entertainment agency ShowBT opened a franchise in the Philippines. At first, it was only an event and promotion services offered, but later, the agency started to scout aspirants to form the company's first Filipino group soon, and that name from "Narra" to "SB19", which refers as "Soundbreak" the music in the OPM scene and "19" are connections to the number codes of South Korea and the Philippines.
Geong Seong Ham (known as "Tatang Robin"), Adelaide Hong (known as "Hong Ganda"), and other staffs of ShowBT were involved in creation of the group, which the final products are Sejun (now "Pablo"), Stell, Josh, Ken, and Justin.WhenB19 came into existence in May 2018 and debuted in October 26 in the same year, the group became underappreciated by many. In fact, their debut single "Tilaluha" chose over "Love Goes" to attract Filipino listeners which are fond of listening ballads, but the song got mediocre result to the listeners, cited as disappointment for them.
Months in preparation, SB19 decides their "make-or-break" song "Go Up", as the song tackles about the identity of SB19, reaching their dreams way up. But the same as "Tilaluha" goes, it didn't go well, and received worse feedbacks, especially on the infamous "Go Up Press Conference", that every A'Tin want to forget about.
All of the members initially left their dreams to be a PPop idol, except Stell, who is the only faithful that time and believe that SB19 will spark, and so does the members back from almost departure. And the viral tweet became the most viewed dance practice video in PPOP history, which started to be known around the world, and the rest is history.
For further proof, according to an article in Rappler (Link: https://www.rappler.com/entertainment/music/data-sb19-popularity-records-fans-through-years/), SB19 gained over 130,000 likes and 160,000 followers on their Facebook page, as well as 30,000 followers on Instagram, a week after their dance practice became viral.
What impact goes? The song "Go Up" and SB19 was so crucial in attracting to Filipino listeners at that time, but it was also paved the way for the SB19 to be destined as "PPop Kings", and become easier to create a thin line from discrimination and prejudice, so that even listening to a PPop song won't be a problem. This song also ushers the mark of the current generation of Pinoy pop, known as the "Golden Era" and the start of the "PPop Rise" movement.
Unlike popular PPOP groups that first publicly known on either TV shows or radio, SB19 is the first PPOP group to became first publicly known via social media. As a result, social media is now the medium of the PPOP fans to discover more groups, that help the role to quickly grow in just a short amount of time.
Today, even PPOP groups are now looking on what SB19 had done, have done, and what will be done for Pinoy pop. And opens more opportunities for professionals and performers to boost on economy, and it's time for the listeners to back on "support local" to revive the local music industry again.
Truly, SB19 had a unique story to be told. They start their careers in the environment where PPOP is yet to appreciated, and full of harsh and crab-mentality, and became the example of not giving up, either you are aspiring PPOP idol, or just an individual one whose reaching out their dreams.
As A'Tin and PPop fan, this one will remember on the books, and perhaps, it is putting on the line as one of the most important dates in PPOP history.
PPOP is happening, PPOP is rising!
